Development and testing of appropriate and affordable latrine components

As part of the project “Piloting Innovative and Effective Approaches for the Scaling Up of Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion in Urban and Rural Areas of Tanzania” EEPCO carried out the design, demonstration and testing of latrine products in Temeke District (Dar es Salaam).
The overall objective of EEPCO’s assignment was to develop appropriate and affordable latrine components, following the social marketing approach. The demand for latrine products, the profitability of the market were tested, as to ensure that products and services could be effectively distributed to and afforded by communities.

Project activities included:
-    Design of latrine technology which can be serviced by gulpar and is suitable for
     children with disabilities
-    Training of artisans to construct such latrine options
-    Construction of sanitation facilities at Mji mpya School (double vault ventilated improved pit latrine)
     with necessary fittings for disabled children (handrails, ramps, seating seats)
